Refugee Camp Market

Tanzania

Burundi has endured prolonged internal conflict over the years forcing many Burundians to flee their country seeking safety in refugee camps across bordering countries along the Great Lakes Region. In Tanzania, several refugee camps have been operational and currently remain managed by international and local partners under the oversight of the Tanzanian government. For these agencies, ensuring that Burundian refugees – which include a significant number of women and children – feel a sense of normalcy and acceptance by the host community has been a key objective in the larger strategy to provide resources for their livelihood recovery.

Emergency Management engagement focused on:

  • Field assessment of refugee camps to determine project needs
  • Personal interviews with Burundian refugees
  • Coordination with humanitarian partners
  • Resource mobilization with the U.S. federal government (Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration – PRM)
  • Proposal Writing

Guatemala

Between 2014 and 2015, many agricultural areas in Central America suffered a significant drought driven by the effects of El NiƱo. In Guatemala, rural indigenous communities whose livelihoods largely depend on agricultural crops were heavily impacted by this prolonged drought. Local Guatemalan authorities, in coordination with international development partners mobilized to help alleviate affected families with monetary income through Cash Voucher Assistance (CVA). This initiative targeted female heads of households based on previous documented evidence that priority household decisions are best made under their management, compared to their male counterparts.

Emergency Management engagement focused on:

  • Field assessment of the impacted indigenous rural areas
  • Interview with direct CVA beneficiaries
  • Project monitoring, evaluation and documentation
  • Resource mobilization with USAID/Food for Peace (FFP)
