Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

Belize

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) supported a government-led water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH) project that targeted Belizean primary schools in rural areas of the country. This initiative called for an independent assessment of the conditions of the schools and the design of a management strategy to act upon the assessment findings.

Emergency Management engagement focused on:

• Thorough on-site WASH assessment of various Belizean primary schools in the country
• Coordination with local Belizean government authorities and contractors
• Engagement with primary school teachers and students
• Drafting of a management response strategy

Panama

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) through its Sub-Regional Office for public health emergencies based in Panama, required support with identifying regional suppliers of emergency WASH equipment and relief items. The objective was to further enhance PAHO’s regional strategy to quickly mobilize resources and fast-track administrative and logistical requirements for international humanitarian shipment within the region.

Emergency Management engagement focused on:

• Mapping and contacting legitimate WASH equipment suppliers in Latin America
• Development of an internal WASH catalogue that provided a list of key suppliers, technical product information and recommendations for use during emergency response operations
