Ebola Treatment Center

Equatorial Guinea

In early 2023, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Equatorial Guinea declared an outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) being this the first occurrence ever in the country. Based on lessons learned from previous regional outbreaks, i.e. Ebola, the World Health Organization (WHO) in coordination with the local government and external partners rapidly ramped up a multi-disciplinary health response to the impacted areas involving strategic logistics planning and operations to support the local health systems.

Emergency Management engagement focused on:

  • Setup of patient isolation and treatment centers in critical areas
  • Assessment of water and sanitation conditions in rural areas
  • Close coordination with local health authorities at National and Provincial level
  • Shipment, local procurement and distribution of medical items and consumables
  • Fleet management for strategic field response involving community outreach, epidemiological surveillance, laboratory operations and overall coordination

Sierra Leone

In 2014, West Africa became the epicenter of a deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak that spread mainly throughout Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. The World Health Organization (WHO) in coordination with local health partners and external government authorities steered a multi-country health response that mobilized experts from various fields.

Emergency Management engagement focused on:

  • Assessment of Ebola Treatment Centers (ETC)
  • Coordination with the local Ministry of Health and the military
  • Field coordination with humanitarian health partners and foreign government agencies
  • Administrative and logistical support to deployed Emergency Medical Teams (EMT)
  • Information management and reporting
