Emergency RH Kits
Ecuador, El Salvador, Colombia, Cuba
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. UNFPA’s Regional Office for the Americas commissioned a humanitarian logistics assessment of an alternative prepositioning and distribution model that would support the faster delivery of emergency hygiene items and reproductive health (RH) kits to women impacted by a disaster. This capacity assessment involved four (4) countries in the region.
Emergency Management engagement focused on:
- Coordination with government authorities (health, military, external affairs)
- Coordination with local humanitarian partners (UN agencies, NGOs and faith-based organizations)
- Interview with women leaders representing communities previously impacted by a disaster
- Identifying specific Emergency RH Kits to be potentially prepositioned based on local needs
- Mapping of infrastructure and logistics capacity from government and private sector services
- Drafting of Action Plan for implementation
Barbados
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) through its Sub-Regional Office for the Caribbean based in Barbados requested assistance for the review of their existing emergency logistics strategy as part of organizational efforts to strengthen multi-country and multi-stakeholder coordination for responding to rapid onset and recurring disasters. The aim of this review was to identify gaps in the overall health logistics preparedness and response strategy and recommend adjustments per consultation findings and lessons learned from previous response operations.
Emergency Management engagement focused on:
- Detailed revision of existing humanitarian partner agreements
- Mapping and identification of critical health commodity suppliers in-country
- Coordination with local and regional Disaster Management agencies
- Drafting of report with recommendations for improved multi-country coordination
